Training for the Doormen of Westport.

Westport Doorman's Group are delighted at the success of their first Doorman Training Course which was held in Hotel Westport on the 22nd February.  The course will now be extended to include doormen from around the country.

The course which was the first of its kind in the country was attended by local doorman has attracted national attention and was the subject of an Ireland on Sunday feature article last week (Sunday 2nd March).

John Brawn the instructor on the course said he "was delighted with the efforts of the students" and awarded them all their Level 1 certificates on the day.

Westport Doorman's group are now preparing for their 2nd course which will be held on the 8th March in Hotel Westport.  This will again be taught by John Brawn who is Ireland's leading self defence expert. This will be another 8 hour course on a more advanced level.
The course is a level 1 of a 5 level course and it is unique to John Brawn's Realistic Self Defence Systems.  This is the first time in Ireland that Doorman have been trained under such a scheme.

John Brawn is Ireland's leading self defence expert and was himself a doorman for over 13 years.  John Brawn has developed this unique course specially for doormen.  He has taught in over a dozen establishments throughout the country and is proud to be teaching it here in his home town.

John says "Westport is an increasing popular tourist resort and in recent years there has been an increase in young people visiting the town.  I think that it is important that Doormen know how to deal with problems unique to doorwork and how to present themselves and act in a professional manner.  Westport is lucky in that in general there is little trouble and that its Doormen are competent and pro-active.  I am glad to start their professional training this month."

News Update 15 Jan 2003.

Well done everyone on surviving the Christmas and New Year.

Thankfully none of our members or their employers had any trouble.

In fact, the trouble was confined as usual to premises who refuse to use security and the usual haunts!

New Training courses will be arranged for the Spring.  All members are urged to attend these courses and the usual meetings.  The times and dates of these meetings will be supplied next month in our newsletter "THE DOOR".

Any criticism of members or the profession should be reported to the Group immediately so that we can give a counter argument.

Carry on the good work.

PRESS RELEASE
30 August 2002

Westport Doorman's Group

Firstly we would like to thank all those in Westport and elsewhere who have expressed their support for us and our petition.

Cllr Durcan made his comments on Doorman with reference to the amount of Security personnel at work on Reek Sunday. There were several incidents in Westport and Newport in the run up to Reek Sunday which made publicans in both towns fear for the safety of their patrons and their premises. This lead to a small increase to the normal Private Security presence on that day.

In total only 6 of Westport's 60 public houses and hotels had security on duty that day. With expected crowds of between 30,000 to 60,000 people climbing the Reek that Sunday the 18 doormen on duty were by no means an over-reaction by publicans or security.

Cllr Durcan's comments that Private Security Personnel dressed in black were an 'unpleasant sight' and were inhibiting the free movement of tourists was uncalled for and we call on him, again, to apologise for his remarks whether he intended them to be insulting and derogatory or not.

The importance of Private Security in towns like Westport is underlined by the violence in Sligo and Castlebar this week.

Cllr Durcan and Cllr Durcan alone is responsible for his comments, he cannot and will not be allowed to go on blaming conspiracies and media manipulation for his comments and the reaction of Westport Doormen's Group to them. Cllr Durcan should be supportive of publicans and private security in an increasingly violent world.

Petition

Response to the comments of Mr Patrick Durcan of Westport Town Council on Mid West Radio last week.

We the undersigned,

Reject completely Mr Durcan’s comments made on Mid West Radio News last week concerning Private Security in Westport.

We are very upset with Mr Durcan’s comments that imply Doormen may not always operate within the law.

We found his remarks offensive and distressing.  We reject completely his suggestion that Private Security outside a pub looks unpleasant.  He also disparagingly refers to the way Doormen dress.  We would like to assure Mr Durcan that Doormen take pride in their smart appearance.

We refute Mr Durcan’s suggestion that we in any way inhibit the free movement of tourists from one premises to another.  In fact Doormen are more than happy to assist tourists in any way that we can.

We would also like to point out that Private Security is one of the fastest growing industries in the country and that is soon to be regulated by a specific Act of Government, which we welcome.

Mr Durcan should also be aware that Private Security personnel are experienced and trained professionals who operate as agents of Publicans and Hoteliers to ensure the safety of their patrons, the running of orderly public houses, crowd control and compliance with statutory legislation concerned with combating under age drinking in licensed premises.

Mr Durcan should also be aware that Private Security personnel have been at work in Westport for almost two decades.

We call on him to apologise immediately.

We would also like to know if these remarks are Mr Durcan's opinion or are indicative of how the Town Council feels.

Signed

The Members of Westport Doormen's Group
